Meeting Notes – 30 March 2015

Monday March 30, 2015 10 AM Agenda and Notes
Attending: Brenda, Stephanie, Debra, Leva, Caroline, Martin, Lin

1.Welcome & News
– BCcampus Open Ed won award for Creative Innovation for OT project by OE Consortium
– B, C, M, L attended ACRL conference, lots of people, lots of sessions on OER and good tips (and a few mentioning BCOER)
– interesting discussions: “free alternative textbooks” definition of “open access” “Oer” needs work – sometimes if something is free individuals calling it open when it is not it just means it’s been licensed for our use /conceptual shift
– tip: put OER in your catalogue helps e.g. MARC records and version…
– tip: Ask ourselves how do we make it easy for faculty?
ACTION: think of ways we can “make OER easy for faculty”

2. CC Licensing work (Stephanie)
– CC Primer written and feedback needed pls.
– intent to clarify the confusion/audience is librarians first (faculty indirectly or repurpsed)
– free doesn’t mean its OER per discussion
– case dependent so SS want to give baseline knowledge; foundational tool for librarians
Suggestions for document :
– chunk down the info
– split btw users OER /creators of OER
– visuals would be good or at-a-glance tool or flow chart
– possibly interactive/linked screens
– keep it simple
ACTION: feedback to Stephanie please

3.Subject Guides work (Erin/Amanda away – Leva spoke to this)
– Faculty assessment Checklist done by Amanda and shared
ACTION: feedback to Amanda and then we will post on the web
-Mediawiki orientation Session went well; thank you Amanda and Erin (http://mediawiki.bccampus.ca)
ACTION: continuing experimentation; documentation of best practices on Mediawiki site and planning for upcoming webinar

4.Conference Presentations/booth
Busy Spring for us!
– BCLA in May (Brenda/Caroline/Rajiv)
– OT Summit in May (Caroline/Leva/Erin)
– Etug in June (poster) (Leva/Debra …)
– STHLE in June (booth) (Leva and colleagues)
ACTION: Brenda & Caroline meeting to discuss; Leva to meet with Caroline and Debra
ACTION: Let’s share our notes from conferences in our working wiki; We will create a page in the working wiki for this; also Leva and others share your presentations and proposals for BCOER so we can borrow and re-use

5. Other Items:
April 2016 – ACRL – BCOER presentations – Call for proposals
ACTION: Brenda is putting in a proposal and can present if accepted as she is planning to attend
Let’s convene a meeting of the BCOER at BCLA or OT Summit
ACTION: we can look at schedule but OT Summit might be a better bet as BCLA is packed agenda.

OER Poster

Context for building the OER Poster at the BCOER Hackfest:
This is the page for OER Poster for advocating OER to BC faculty and for awareness building. This poster addresses: What is Open/OER?; What type of resources are OER? Why should faculty care? What are benefits for students? Some stats needed relevant to BC context. The idea is to use this poster for display at workshop/conference and also in smaller format for handouts or digital/linkable web page. It is meant to be a tool to evoke conversation with faculty in particular. Here is the final poster with BCcampus colours dated Oct. 1st 2014. Feel free to remix and revise the colour combos as perhaps that’s best to be left for your graphic people to adjust as you would like it. I will print some 11X17 posters for our event Oct 27th. There is artwork for a larger sized poster as well – LLWe are updating the Poster so Stay-tuned – Oct 17/14 Continue reading “OER Poster”
